Vision and Mission

MOST AI Biomedical Research Center at National Cheng Kung University

The center, MOST AI Biomedical Research Center at NCKU, is supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) with fourteen multi-year biomedical AI research projects. It was established on Feb. 12, 2018 in Tainan and covers four major fields: smart medicine, smart healthcare, smart biotechnology and ethics & humanities. As the only MOST-supported center situated in Central and Southern Taiwan, it is strongly endorsed by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) along with many other important universities, hospitals, and research institutes in this area. Long-term research collaborations of these teams have been redirected towards emerging new

AI technologies with biomedical and biotechnological researches.

These research tasks have been developed under the collaboration of clinicians, biomedical and AI experts, and legal and ethical advisors at reputable hospitals and universities. The Center’s medical and healthcare research includes identification of mycobacterium tuberculosis, liver biopsy image analysis, prediction system for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment efficacy/post treatment recurrence, developing therapeutic strategies for high risk colorectal cancer, precise acoustic neuroma tumor detection model, neuromorphic circuit validation platform for image computation, healthy living in a super-aged society, homecare robots for the elderly and diabetic patients, socially interactive and emotionally sensitive systems, neuro feedback training/sleep enhancement, and dementia care are currently under investigation in our center. Three projects for biotechnology and

AI ethics are also included in the center’s research.

Project teams are rapidly developing biological and biomedical AI application techniques and contributing to the big databank for biomedical imaging and medical records. Our center strives to integrate multiple disciplines in biomedical science and AI to provide solid foundations and cutting-edge technologies for medicine and biology. Through interdisciplinary, inter-institutional, and international cooperation, the center aims at developing innovative AI solutions and cultivating top AI personnel for the biomedical industries. Center members are encouraged to obtain hands-on experience and gain foreign exposure by joining visits, studies, and cooperation programs with world-renowned scientists, laboratories and institutions. Assistance with patent planning, clinical validation and certification is also provided. It is our ultimate goal to link the research outcomes to enterprises and promote AI solutions to the market systems for meeting the unmet needs of biomedical societies.
