Not being able to get a good nights’ rest is a big source of frustration and over time can affect one’s quality of life. In a study conducted by the World Health Organization in 2019, it’s estimated that sleep disturbance affects roughly 2 billion people worldwide. In Taiwan the number of people affected by poor sleep quality is around 6 million, of those, 2.5 million suffer from chronic insomnia. A more astonishing number the 8.8 billion sleeping pill prescriptions written each year in Taiwan! What are some ways besides traditional medication that can help with sleep disturbances?
Prof. Sheng-Fu Liang’s research team is comprised of persons with backgrounds in AI, edge computing, neurosensing, information engineering, neuroscience, psychiatry, and sleep medicine. Together they have developed an Intelligent Neurofeedback Training and Sleep Enhancement System that can be used for all ages as well as clinical patients. Without any usage of medication, the system uses brain signals for feedback and analysis and directly adjusts based on that. Experimental results indicate that after about 6 weeks of training, 70% of the people learn to control themselves and showed improved sleep indicators. This method’s acceptance is high due to not requiring medicine. The aim is for this system to eventually be offered in hospitals as well as every day life to help those who suffer from sleep disturbances.
